Speaking on BBC Radio Solent after the match, manager Eddie Howe was quoted as saying: "Bolton showed us a lot of respect by trying to frustrate the crowd and the players and we had to try to break them down and be really clinical. I thought they defended well and were very disciplined and we never really got any chances. We had plenty of momentum in terms of possession, forcing corners and threatening to do something, but we couldn’t find that little bit of quality and our match winners were slightly off key today. I felt that we could get one opportunity and then equalise, which would have meant a good point for us on reflection. In the second half we had to make all the running and I thought we did that well for 45 minutes, but without getting that goal that we needed. We did everything we could and chased the game, which is why we conceded the second goal".

He went on to say: "I could stand here all day and tell you what we needed to do better, but that’s the evolution of this team. We said at the start of the season that this was a big step up and I think the last few games have highlighted that. But we need everyone standing together and knowing where we need to go as a football club. We can’t over-react to good performances and bad performances, it’s very much an even keel for us".
