Bury were dumped out at the first round by Middlesbrough at Gigg Lane as the Champtionship side eased through 2-1. Emnes (33rd min) and Leadbitter (61st min) drew a sole response from Hughes (64th min), but it wasn't enough.

Carlisle United eased through to the next round following a single goal victory over Accrington Stanley at Brunton Park. Robson scored the only goal in the 39th minute.

Franchise FC were taken to a penalty shoot out by Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road after a 1-1 draw after extra time. Bowditch netted for Franchise on the stroke of half time, with Mohamed levelling in the 58th minute. Franchise won the penalty shoot-out 5-3.

Crewe Alexandra cruised past Hartlepool United at Gresty Road with an emphatic 5-0. Goals from Leitch-Smith (7th min), Clayton (13th and 39th min), and Pogba (34th and 91st mins) made light work of United.

Doncaster Rovers managed to scrape past League new-boys York City at the Keepmoat Stadium. Coulson gave City the lead in the 65th minute, but conceded a penalty in the 74th. Rovers ran out 4-2 winners on penalties.

Leeds United eased past Shrewsbury Town with a comfortable 4-0 win over the newly promoted side at Elland Road. Becchio gave United the lead in the 20th minute, with further goals from Varney (26th min), Norris (66th min) and McCormack (70th min penalty).

A upset was caused at Meadow Lane as Bradford City knocked out their League One hosts, Notts County as Hanson scored the only goal in the 95th minute.

A bigger shock came at Bramhall Lane as Sheffield United were knocked out by Burton Albion. Yussuf gave Albion the lead in the 34th minute, with Blackman levelling 7 minutes in to the second half. Taylor gave Albion the lead again in the 97th minute, with Collins levelling in the 105th minute. The penalty shoot out was won by Burton Albion 5-4, adding to United play-off hangover from last season.

Walsall eased their way past Brentford at Bescot as Hemmings scored the only goal of the game in the 8th minute.
