Carling Cup - First Round Draw

Last updated : 16 June 2010 By Bournemouth Co-Ordinator

The first round draw of the Carling Cup has been made, with the Cherries facing the short trip to near neighbours Southampton at St Mary's.

The draw in this competition will have Cherries hoping for a repeat of the victory over the Saints, in the League Cup, which the Cherries won 3-2 (on agg) in what was then a 2-legged tie.

Manager Eddie Howe is quoted on BBCi as saying: "Everyone thinks Southampton will be very strong, so the match will give us a useful yardstick. We want to go there and try to win the game. The Carling Cup is a great competition, and we want to go as far as we can in it. Saints have got a really good squad. They did fantastically last season despite a points deduction, and they've got a magnificent stadium. We don't need any more motivation to go there and put on a good performance. It's fantastic for us considering how far we've come in the last 18 months. It's great for us to be playing games against sides as big as Southampton".

The full set of fixtures will be published tomorrow (June 17th).
