Championship Cherries - Part 3

Games between these two have not been dull in recent seasons. No Cherries fan will fail to remember the memorable play-off encounter at the end of the 2010/11 season, which saw the Cherries miss out on a crack at promotion after a play-off penalty shoot-out disappointment, followed with the Cherries completing a rare League double over the Terriers. Town will be looking to improve on last season which saw them just survive on the final day of the season. Town are looking to boost their squad ahead of the new season, but are being hampered by the new Financial Fair Play rules all clubs have to adhere to this season.

Ipswich Town (H: 29/12 A: 21/04)

The most recent meetings between the two have been restricted to Cup competitions, with the last Laegue meeting coming way back in 1989/90. I suspect Ipswich will be a dark horse this season with Mick McCarthy in charge from the start of the season after the Tractorboys looked like relegation fodder at the start of last season.

Leeds United (H: 25/03 A: 01/10)

  HOME AWAY
PL  W  D  L  F  A  W  D  L  F   A
 8  -  2  2  1  4  -  -  4  2  11

The stats speak for themselves ….... AFC Bournemouth have never beaten Leeds United in the handful of encounters both have had in the League over the years, the most recent coming in the 2007/08 season. The most infamous meeting came at the end of the 89/90 season when both needed to win as the Cherries were looking to avoid the drop and Leeds were looking to go up. Leeds won that match, and rest has been well documented! No surprise that both matches between the two are midweek!

Leicester City (H: 01/02 A: 26/10)

  HOME AWAY
PL  W  D  L  F  A  W  D  L  F  A
 6  1  -  2  6  7  2  -  1  3  2

When the Cherries were in the second tier last time round, the match at Filbert Street was played at 1130 on Boxing Day in each of the three seasons the two played. This time round the Cherries still visit on the 26th, but two months earlier in October. A new ground awaits at the King Power Stadium.

The Foxes will be looking to go one step further this season having missed out on promotion via the play-offs last time round. No major swapping of players over the course of the Summer.

Middlesbrough (H: 15/03 A: 21/09)

  HOME AWAY
PL  W  D  L  F  A  W  D  L  F   A
10  1  3  1  7  6  -  1  4  3  13

These two famously battled it out for the Third Division Trophy back in the 86/87 season, which went to the Cherries with a (then) record number of points for a title winning side. New grounds await both sets of supporters as the Cherries visit the Riverside Stadium first, with the return visit to a revitalised Dean Court next March.

Player movement in the Summer has been light to say the least, with just two players coming in since the last ball was kicked last season as the Club hopes to improve on their dismal away record last season, where just 17 points were collected on the road.

Millwall (H: 05/10 A: 03/05)

  HOME AWAY
PL   W  D   L   F   A  W  D   L   F   A
72  16  9  10  57  27  9  2  29  31  74

Definitely a match which is usually a home win against one of the few sides AFC Bournemouth have met with any regularity over the years – the last encounter coming in the League Cup which saw the Cherries sent packing after a 4-0 defeat at The Den. At one stage last season Millwall were up in the play-off places, but finished the season just outside the drop zone – surviving on the final day of the season. Clearly they're hoping to avoid a repeat having recruited in the Summer, most notably ex-Cherries target Scott MacDonald from Middlesbrough.
