Championship Cherries - Part 4

Last updated : 02 August 2013 By Bournemouth Co-Ordinator

Nottingham Forest (H: 26/04 A: 19/10)

  HOME AWAY
PL  W  D  L  F  A  W  D  L  F  A
10  3  1  1  9  5  -  2  3  1  8

Another less than happy hunting ground for the Cherries is the City Ground where victory has yet to be tasted.

Last season Forest missed out on a play-off place by a solitary point, perhaps as a punishment for swapping managers more often than not last season. The East Midland side will certainly be looking to go one step further and break in to the top-6 for a crack at promotion to the Premiership once again.

Queens Park Rangers (H: 05/04 A: 03/12)

  HOME AWAY
PL   W  D  L   F   A  W  D   L  F   A
70  19  7  9  63  39  7  7  21  29  58

This will be one tie that will be eagerly awaited as a certain Harry Redknapp brings his relegated side to Dean Court – assuming he lasts that long in to the season at Loftus Road.

There has been quite a turn around in players since relegation, given that the side from West London have got to fit in with the Financial Fair Play rules by the end of July 2013 – so their big earners have gone!

Reading (H: 08/04 A: 07/12)

  HOME AWAY
PL   W   D   L   F   A   W  D   L   F   A
102  25  16  11  73  49  11  9  30  54  93

Without doubt rekindling the rivalry with Reading is a highlight of the season as it's been 11 long seasons since the two crossed paths having been at opposite ends of the spectrum for much of the time since. The most memorable encounter came at the Madj Stad at the end of the 2000/01 season when the Cherries let slip a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 and with it a play-off place slipped through their fingers, leaving Reading to go in to the end of season shake up. Reading will be one of the favourites to go back up at the first attempt.

Sheffield Wednesday (H: 18/04 A: 21/12)

  HOME AWAY
PL  W  D  L  F  A  W  D  L  F  A
8  2  2  -  4  1  2  1  1 4  4

AFC Bournemouth met Sheffield Wednesday for the first time as recently as the 2003/04 season and have since generated a half decent record against the Hillsborough side, who just avoided the drop last season. As a result Sheffield Wednesday have moved in the transfer market to bolster their defence as they look to avoid any relegation drama in the season ahead.

Watford (H: 18/01 A: 10/08)

  HOME AWAY
PL   W   D   L   F   A   W   D   L   F   A
97  20  17  11  84  55  14  11  24  47  67

Could Watford start the season licking their wounds after their play-off disappointment from last season? Something they could have avoided if they'd bagged the necessary points to gain automatic promotion on the final day of the season! Pretty much off their loan signings have signed permanent deals in time for the new season as the League has closed the loop hole which allowed this to happen last season. A large Cherries contingent will be heading to Vicarage Road for the first away match of the season hoping to see the Cherries pull off a shock result on the road.

Wigan Athletic (H: 17/08 A: 11/01)

  HOME AWAY
PL  W  D  L   F   A  W  D  L   F   A
37  8  5  5  21  15  5  5  9  15  22

The FA Cup match at the DW Stadium saw the Cherries dominate against a side that were destined for relegation come the end of the Premiership season. Now the two are to lock horns in the League for the first time since the 2001/02 season, prior to which the two were playing each other regularly before Wigan's investment took them to the top flight.

A new management team are in charge at the DW following the departure of Martinez over the Summer, so it should be interesting to see how they settle down to life in the second tier as the Latics bid to return to the top flight, despite their distraction of the Eurpoa League.

Yeovil Town (H: 26/12 A: 12/04)

  HOME AWAY
PL  W  D  L   F  A  W  D  L  F  A
16  6  1  1  13  5  2  3  2  8  8

Who would have thought, 12 months ago, that Yeovil Town would be in the Championship?! If anything the bookies had them to go down to League Two! So we have the true dark horses in this second tier, despite their tag as relegation fodder by the bookies. The Somerset side have been recruiting heavily over the Summer, including ex-Cherries loanee Dan Seaborne who signed from Southampton. A remarkable Championship adventure awaits the Glovers even if it is a quick return to League One.
