Championship Review - April 19th

Last updated : 19 April 2014 By Bournemouth Co-Ordinator

Promoted Leicester City edged closer to the title with a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers at the King Power Stadium. A solitary Nugent goal in the 68th minute means that the Foxes need one more win to clinch the title. Leicester City 1st, Queens Park Rangers 4th.

Burnley edged closer to clinching the second automatic promotion place with a 1-0 win over Blackpool at Bloomfield Road. A Kightly goal just after half time proved to be difference as the Tangerines are now in serious danger of slipping out of the Championship at the wrong end of the table. Blackpool 22nd, Burnley 2nd.

Although it's highly unlikely, it looks like the opportunity for Derby County to go up automatically has all but gone, even though they managed to beat Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat. Goals for Thorne on the stroke of half time and Martin in the 79th minute means that the Rams are keeping the Clarets on their toes, while Donny teeter on the edge. Doncaster Rovers 19th, Derby County 3rd.

Wigan Athletic are all but home and dry for a play-off spot after a comprehensive 3-0 win over Reading at the DW Stadium. Goals from Gomez (30th min), Waghorn (42nd min) and McManaman (51st min) blew the Royals away. Wigan Athletic 5th, Reading 7th.

That slip by Reading allowed Brighton & Hove Albion to nip in to the final play-off place following a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town at the John Smiths Stadium. Norwood gave the Terriers the lead in the 6th  minute only to see Bruno level with 7 minutes left on the watch. Huddersfield Town 17th, Brighton & Hove Albion 6th.

Watford have kept their slender hopes of making the end of season play-offs alive, while denting those of Ipswich Town as the Hornets claimed a 3-1 win at Vicarage Road. Riera opened the scoring for the home side in the 21st minute, with Wordworth levelling in the 50th minute. Aneglla (63rd min) and McGugan (65th min) left the Tractorboys with too much to do. Watford 12th, Ipswich Town 8th.

Nottingham Forest gave themselves hope of making the end of season play-offs as they managed to see Birmingham City off at the City Ground. A Derbyshire goal in the 2nd minutes proved to be enough, leaving the Blues deep in trouble at the wrong end of the table. Nottingham Forest 9th, Birmingham City 18th.

AFC Bournemouth slipped to an uncharacteristic slip at home to Sheffield Wednesday to all but scupper their play-off hopes at Dean Court. Nuhiu gave the Owls a 16th minute lead, with Pugh levelling 15 minutes later. The joy at Dean Court didn't last long as Hutchinson restored the vistors advantage a couple of minutes later. Kermorgant levelled for the Cherries in the 57th minute, but late goals from Best (87th min) and Maguire (96th min) meant that the points headed north. AFC Bournemouth 10th, Sheffield Wednesday 15th.

Millwall have given themselves a massive boost in their fight to avoid the drop to League One. A Maierhofer brace in the 16th and 30th minutes at the Riverside against Middlesbrough, only drew a response from Ledesma in the 80th minute. The result hoists the Lions out of the drop zone to go above their near neighbours Charlton, dumping Blackpool in to the bottom-3. Middlesbrough 13th, Millwall 20th.

Barnsley have it all to do if they are going to avoid the drop following Leeds United winning 1-0 at Oakwell, with McCormack scoring the only goal of the game in the 16th minute. Barnsley 23rd, Leeds United 16th.

Of the two other games played out both ended 0-0 between Blackburn Rovers (11th) and Yeovil Town (24th); and Charlton Athletic (21st) and Bolton Wanderers (14th).
