Championship Review - April 5th

Last updated : 05 April 2014 By Bournemouth Co-Ordinator

The weekend kicked off at the King Power Stadium as Leicester City went in search of an all important win to push them to within an inch of promotion to the Premiership. Mahrez got the ball rolling for the Foxes with a 10th minute strike, which was cancelled out when Antonio levelled for Sheffield Wednesday in the 37th minute. Knockhaert sealed victory with a 61st minute strike to set up the likelihood of getting promoted without kicking a ball on Saturday - if results went in their favour. Leicester City 1st, Sheffield Wednesday 14th.

Briefly on Burnley who are looking to return to the Premiership, were ehld by Watford at Vicarage Road. Deeney put the Hornets ahead in the 9th minute, with Arfield levelling with 4 minutes left on the clock. The result leaves the Clarets with 3 wins (max) needed to confirm promotion. Watford 12th, Burnley 2nd.

Now what of the chasing pack looking to nick automatic promotion, or at least confirm a play-off place. Queens Park Rangers slipped up at Dean Court as 10-man AFC Bournemouth clinched their 4th straight success with a 2-1 win. Elphick headed home on the stroke of half time to put the Cherries ahead, with Traore levelling 22 seconds after the restart. Grabban bagged his 20th goal of the season on the hour mark to set up the win, even through Arter saw red 8 minutes later. QPR couldn't find a way past the resolute Cherries defence. The result leaves the Cherries 5-points shy of the play-off places, while QPR still have work to do to book their place in the end of season lottery. AFC Bournemouth 10th, Queens Park Rangers 3rd.

The other side of the equation for Leicester City to get promoted rested with their East Midland neighbours, Derby County who were up in the north east to face Middlesbrough at The Riverside. A solitary Chalobah goal in the 69th minute was enough to give Boro the points. Middlesbrough 13th, Derby County 4th.

The combination of results at Dean Court and The Riverside means that Leicester City are promoted to the Premiership after a 10-year absence.

Wigan Athletic piled more misery on to Leeds United as a solitary Waghorn goal in the 33rd minute sealed victory for the Latics. Wigan Athletic 5th, Leeds United 16th.

A 73rd minute strike from Williams helped Reading to 3-points over Charlton Athletic at The Valley to keep the Royals in the last play-off place, with the pack breathing down their necks. Charlton Athletic 21st, Reading 6th.

Just when you think that the sides struggling at the foot of the table are being cut away, up pop results to suggest that the battle to stay up will go the last day of the season. Millwall secured a vital win in their quest to remain in the Championship as Malone (19th min) and Martin (39th min) gave the Lions a 2-goal lead at the break. Paterson pulled one back for Nottingham Forest in the 53rd minute, but it wasn't enough to inspire to complete a comeback. Nottingham Forest 7th, Millwall 23rd.

Blackburn Rovers have half a chance of making the play-offs after they managed to see Ipswich Town off at Ewood Park as the home side ran out 2-0 winners. Goals from Rhodes (64th min) and Gestede (80th min) sealed victory. Blackburn Rovers 11th, Brighton & Hove Albion, 8th.

After their indifferent season, Bolton Wanderers have probably done enough to secure their Championship status for another season, helped with a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town at the John Smiths Stadium. A Mason goal in the 92nd minute was enough to seal victory. Huddersfield Town 17th, Bolton Wanderers 15th.

They might not be able to win at home, but they can on their travels as Birmingham City had Doncaster Rovers looking over their shoulders following a 3-1 win at the Keepmoat even though Quinn gave Donny the lead in the 36th minute. Goals from Macheda (57th & 76th mins) and Novak (71st min) proved to be enough to ease the relegation fears of the Blues. Doncaster Rovers 19th, Birmingham City 18th.

At the start of play Yeovil Town's plight looked bleak, but their cause was helped with a massive 2-1 win over Blackpool at Bloomfield Road. Goals from Hayter (16th min pen) and Lawrence (74th min) set the Glovers on their way, with grandon pulling one back for the home side 4 minutes later. Blackpool are still looking over their shoulders, while the Glovers have hope again. Blackpool 20th, Yeovil Town 24th.

A 0-0 draw at Oakwell didn't do much to help Barnsley (22nd) or Brighton & Hove Albion (8th) in their respective quests at either end of the table.
