The biggest win of the day came at Oakwell where Barnsley were smashed by relegated Wigan Athletic as the FA Cup winners walked off with the points following a 4-0 victory. Goals from Watson (37th min), Holt (55th min) set up a 2-goal cushion. The home sides' cause wasn't helped when Jennings saw red in the 66th minute. As the match wore on, numeric advantage was made to count as Barnett (80th min) and Maloney (88th min) enabled the Latics to cruise home. Barnsley 24th, Wigan Athletic 1st.

Blackpool also recorded a good win, with theirs coming over newly promoted Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium. Davies got the seasiders mark in the 17th minute with Jones levelling for Donnyon the hour mark. Late goals from MacKenzie and Ince in the 88th and 90th minutes sealed the win to dash the home sides hopes of a point. Doncaster Rovers 23rd, Blackpool 2nd.

Newly promoted AFC Bournemouth started their season with a decent win over Charlton Athletic at Dean Court. Grabban gave the Cherries the lead in the 26th minute, with Kermorgant levelling just after the restart. The winner was clinched in the 66th minute as Grabban completed his brace to extend the Cherries undefeated run to 10 matches. AFC Bournemouth 3rd, Charlton Athletic 16th.

Leeds United had to come from behind at Elland Road to clinch the points against Brighton & Hove Albion as Ulloa gave the Seagulls the lead in the 13th minute. McCormack (19th min) and a last gasp winner from Murphy (90th min) ensured that the points remained in Yorkshire. Leeds United 4th, Brighton & Hove Albion 15th.

Leicester City, who just missed out in the play-offs last season, started the season with an away win against Middlesbrough at The Riverside after Jutkiewicz put the home side ahead in the 35th minute. Goals from Drinkwater and Vardy in the 60th and 67th minutes ensured that the points went back down to Leicestershire. Middlesbrough 18th, Leicester City 5th.

Pre-season favorites to go up as Champions, QPR, got off to a winning start at Loftus Road as they edged Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 to claim the win, even though the Owls took the lead through Nuhiu in the 19th minute. Two quick strikes from Onuoha (40th min) and Johnson (43rd min) helped to make sure that the points remained in West London. QPR 6th, Sheffield Wednesday 19th.

The other relegated side, Reading, also had to come from behind to claim a win ..... theirs coming against Ipswich Town at the Madjeski Stadium after Tabb put the Tractorboys ahead in the 16th minute. The Royals levelled on the stroke of half time through Le Fondre, leaving Guthrie to bag the winner with 15 minutes left on the clock. Reading 7th, Ipswich Town 17th.

A solitary Lansbury goal in the 53rd minute was enough for Nottingham Forest to open their account for the season against Huddersfield Town at the City Ground. Nottingham Forest 8th, Huddersfield Town 21st.

Last seasons beaten pla-off finalists, Watford, claimed a single goal win over Birmingham City at St Andrews as Deeney scored the only goal of the game in the 11th minute. Birmingham City 20th, Watford 9th.

If anyone thought that Yeovil Town were at this level merely to make up the numbers, then think again! The Glovers recorded their first victory in their first match in the second tier with a memorable win at The Den against Millwall. The honour of the winner went to Upson who scored the only goal of the game in the 88th minute to set up a little bit of Glovers history. Millwall 22nd, Yeovil Town 10th.

The only other match played on Saturday came at Turf Moor where Burnley took on Lancashire rivals Bolton Wanderers. A Wheater own goal in the 26th minute set Burnley up, only to see Pratley level for the visitors in the 37th minute. Burnley 12th, Bolton Wanderers 11th.

The remaining match to be played this weekend sees Derby County take on Blackburn Rovers at Pride Park, which is being shown live on Sky Sports, kick off at 4pm on Sunday.
