Leaders Carlisle United had to come from behind at Brunton Park against League Two opposition in the form of Grimsby Town. Bolland had given the League Two side a 28th minute lead. Both sides settled for a replay after Aranalde levelled from the penalty spot in the 85th minute.

Nottingham Forest were also forced in to a replay by League Two strugglers Lincoln City and Sincil Bank. McGugan gave the visitors a 25th minute lead, but saw Wilson put past his own keeper which resulted in the replay.

Leyton Orient were also held to a replay by Bristol Rovers at Brisbane Road. Gray had given the Londoners a 16th minute lead, but both sides settled for a replay after Lambert levelled for Rovers in the 81st minute.

Swansea City are through to the second round after they saw off Billericay Town at New Lodge. But it was the Ryman Premier side who took the lead in the 26th minute through Semanshia. A brace from Bauza in the 59th and 83rd minutes ensured safe passed to round 2 for the Welsh side.

Southend United were made to work for their place in the second round by League Two side Rochdale at Roots Hall. Bailey had given the home side a 1st minute lead, but saw Le Fondre level in the 12th minute. A place in round 2 was secured when Harrold scored the penalty spot in the 24th minute.

Cheltenham Town were very close to a booking their place in the second round, but had to settle for a replay against Brighton & Hove Albion at Whaddon Road. Gillespie put Town ahead with a goal in the 78th minute, but saw Loft level in the final few seconds of the game.

Leeds United were lucky to come away from Edgar Street with a 0-0 draw in the live TV game on Friday night. Hereford United had far the better chances to knock Leeds out of the competition at the first hurdle - including a penalty shout, which was waived away.

Tranmere Rovers eventually came through their first round tie against Chesterfield at Saltergate with a narrow 2-1 win. Lester had given the home side a 29th minute lead. Greenacre levelled from the penalty spot in the 37th minute with Kay making sure of the win with an 84th minute strike.

Doncaster Rovers had to come from behind against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park to ensure a replay. Trotman gave the Latics a 32nd minute lead, with Davies extending the advantage in the 49th minute. A brace from Jamie Hayter in the 63rd and 86th minutes means that the two clubs will have to meet again.

Swindon Town travelled to Wycombe Wanderers for their FA Cup First round tie. Roberts gave the visitors a 66th minute lead with Paynter adding a second in the 72nd minute. The home side set up an interesting finish when Bloomfield pulled one back in the 83rd minute, but it wasn't enough.

Walsall managed to overcome local(ish) rivals Shrewsbury Town at Bescot with a 2-0 win to take them in to the 2nd round. Ricketts fired the home side ahead in the 10th minute with Demontagnac putting the tie beyond doubt in the 66th minute.

Crewe Alexandra booked their place in the second round as well. Their win at Gresty Road came over Franchise FC. McCready put the home side ahead in the 3rd minute, with Cox adding to the advantage in the 65th minute. Although Johnson pulled one back for the visitors in the 69th minute from the penalty spot, it wasn't enough to ensure a replay.

Huddersfield Town were made to work for their place in the second round away at Accrington Stanley. The home side took a 2-goal lead with strikes from Cavanagh (12 mins) and Mullin (25 mins), but it wasn't enough as the League One side came back with goals from Kamara (45 and 83 mins), with the winner coming from Beckett in the final few seconds.

Northampton Town had to come from behind to get a replay against Darlington at the Darlington Arena. Blundell put the home side ahead in the 8th minute, with the visitors making sure of a replay with goal from Larkin in the 26th minute.

Luton Town were held at home by League Two Brentford at Kenilworth Road. Ide had given the Londoners a 20th minute lead. Both sides settled for a replay after Andrew levelled in the 79th minute.

Gillingham were 'giant-killed' at the hands of League Two Barnet at Underhill. Graham had given the League Two side a 27th minute lead, but then saw Yakubu level in the 61st minute and Hatch book a place in the second round just 2 minutes later.

Millwall managed to scrape through to the second round of the FA Cup with a win over Conference strugglers Altrincham. Senior had given the hosts at 45th minute lead. Hopes of a giant killing were snuffed out when Dunne levelled from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute and Hoskins scored in the 62nd minute to ensure safe passage for the Londoners.

AFC Bournemouth also had to come from behind away at Holker Street against Barrow. Rapley gave the home side a 19th minute lead with Karacan levelling for the League One strugglers on the stroke of half time.

Port Vale made it through to the second round with a 2-0 win over Morcambe. Pilkington gave the visitors a 6th minute lead with Willock scoring a 2nd in the 22nd minute.

Playing on Sunday ...... Hartlepool United breezed past Gainsborough Trinity in a thumping 6-0 away win. Doing the damage for the League One side was Barker with a brace in the 8th and 25th minutes, Liddle (51 mins), Moore (70 mins), Brown (76 mins) and Porter (82 mins).

In the live TV game, Torquay United easily shrugged off past giant killers Yeovil Town at Plainmoor with a comfortable 4-1 win. Tood and Stevens hit two quick goals between them just before the break (43 and 45 mins), with Todd netting the third in the 64th minute and Stevens putting the game beyond doubt with the 4th goal in the 89th minute.
