Gillingham Reaction

After such a game, there are mixed reactions relating to the game between the Cherries and the Gills .........

Kevin Bond, speaking to BBC Radio Solent, was quoted after the match as saying: "I'm absolutely devastated just in terms of the result. I think it was the second minute of injury time, we've given away a cheap freekick on the halfway line, didn't deal with the second ball well enough as a result they scored from the corner. A free header, you can criticise but in fairness they had an awful lot of pressure in the second half, we defended with everything bar the last one fantastically. The goalkeeper (Neil Moss) was I thought magnificent and had three incredible chances to wrap the game up - hit the post twice and found the goalkeeper from six yards when we had the whole goal to aim at. But it was not to be. Whilst it was one-nil, you stick enough balls in the box and something is going to go for you and that is the way it happened. It is two points lost really which are valuable but lots of games to go and I'm really pleased with the performance. Really pleased with the application of the players so the only disappointing part about today was that second minute of injury time. It doesn't feel like we have gained a point, it feels like we have dropped two. They were putting eight, nine men into the box late on, taking a chance of leaving one at the back and as a result we had our chances so that is the way it is, you have got to deal with that. And for the entire game we did apart from the last kick of the game almost. When you needed something to drop for you it didn't".

For the Gills, their manager, Ronnie Jepson, was quoted after the match on their Official Web Site as saying: "It was a good goal from Andrew Crofts but if I tried to pick the bones out of that first half performance, I would be here all night. It was poor and very nervous and when you start like that at home, it is very difficult to get your rhythm. There were a few choice words said at half-time and I thought we played better in the second half. Even then we were a bit naïve to the counter but we did create numerous chances. I can be pleased with the second-half performance but if I watch the video of that first-half, I suppose it will drive me insane again. I would have like to have got a goal sooner, rather than leave it to the death. We have stopped the rot of losing three on the spin. You could put it down to nervousness but I don't like to put it down to that. We will have to improve on that and put in better performances, especially at Priestfield. I know Kevin Bond quite well and 'Bondy' will be disappointed with the result but that has happened to us on numerous occasions this year with teams getting back into it at the death. I said to the boys at half-time 'if you're going to lose, lose in a proper manner'".

Even Willo couldn't contain himself at the end of the match on BBC Radio Solent, being quoted as saying: "I feel a bit better now on reflection. I haven't felt as bad since I broke my leg but it was an absolute gutting feeling but on reflection the boys have played fantastic. We hit both posts, Pitman hit one with a header inside of the post and the inside of the other post with a curving shot. Danny Hollands has had one cleared from point blank range, the keeper did well to save it. They hit the cross bar once and Mossy made three fantastic saves so perhaps they will feel it was the right result. But from our point of view, there were some real excellent performances. We seem to have found a nice balance in defence and the midfield and the boy up front Vokes, well you know we might be seeing something special here. For someone so young, the way he holds the ball up, the way he took his goal, was a real treat. You don't get away from the fact that when the ball goes in that late, it's devastating".
