Port Vale did themselves a power of good this weekend with a convincing 3-1 home win over leaders Luton Town. The visitors may have got the ball rolling in the 6th minute through Foley, but Vale hit back through a brace from Hibbert (42 & 59), with Matthews making the points safe in the 81st minute. Port Vale 16th, Luton Town 1st.

Hull City closed the gap at the top to 6 points with a 2-0 win over Colchester United at the KC Stadium. Both of the goals came in the first half through Cort (16) and veteran Barmby (33). Hull City 2nd, Colchester United 17th.

Tranmere Rovers were frustrated, as were AFC Bournemouth at Dean Court as both sides cancelled each other out on the south coast. A deflected shot from Hall put Rovers in front on 22 minutes, before Mills (on loan from Southampton) levelled with a towering header just before the break. AFCB 6th, Tranmere Rovers 3rd.

Sheffield Wednesday will be kicking themselves after their trip to SW London after they let a 3-1 lead slip in the final 8 minutes to draw 3-3 against Brentford! Peacock put the Owls in to a 2-goal lead with strikes in the 4th and 41st minute. There was time before the break for Brentford to cut the deficit as Burton netted on 43. Bullen restored the 2-goal advantage early in the second half (49 mins). Paul Sturrock must have thought that enough had been done to take the points back to Yorkshire. However Peters (82) and Hunt (90) spoiled the party to ensure that the Londoners got something from the game. Brentford 10th, Sheffield Wednesday 4th.

Hartlepool United were subjected to the shock of the day, and shot themselves in the foot at the same time - they lost 1-0 away to Stockport County. A Warren Feeney goal was all that was required in the 19th minute for the home side to record only their 3rd home win of the season. Stockport County 24th, Hartlepool United 5th.

Swindon Town couldn't do any better either! They drew away to Doncaster Rovers. Holmes put Town in front at Belle Vue in the 5th minute, before Roberts levelled on the half hour. Doncaster Rovers 9th, Swindon Town 7th.

With so many drawing, Bristol City also failed to take advantage as they could only draw against struggling Blackpool at Ashton Gate. City took a first half lead on 21 minutes through Brooker, but that only lasted until the hour mark when Wellens levelled for the seasiders. Bristol City 8th, Blackpool 18th.

Bradford City could only draw as well, their point being gained at mid-table Walsall. Schumacher put City in to a 20th minute lead. But here too it wasn't enough as Emblen levelled on 72 to ensure that a point remained in the West Midlands. Walsall 15th, Bradford City 11th.

Chesterfield threw Barry Fry's Peterborough United side a welcome life line, loosing 3-1 at Saltergate to the Posh. Logan put United in front in the 12th minute, which was extended 2 minutes later through the first of Purser's goals. Davies pulled one back for Chesterfield on 24, but that's as good as it got as Purser made sure of the points for Barry Fry in the 62nd minute. Chesterfield 12th, Peterborough United 22nd.

Huddersfield Town compounded the problems for Oldham Athletic, condemning them to their 6th straight defeat!! Goal scoring machine Pawel Abbott put Town in to a 2-goal lead before the break netting in the 4th and 29th minutes. All Oldham could respond with was a 75th minute strike for Branston. Hudderfield Town 13th, Oldham Athletic 19th.

Barnsley sunk Torquay United with 4 goals (3 in the first half) as the Devon side were sent packing by the Yorkshire side. McPhaill, Chopra and Reid effectively wrapped the game up in 5 minutes scoring in the 24th, 27th and 29th minutes respectively. Boulding left it until the 64th minute to make sure, leaving Torquay to bag a consolation in the 88th minute through Phillips. Barnsley 14th, Torquay United 20th.

The only other game to be played was a relegation 6-pointer between Wrexham and Franchise FC. The result (0-0) was probably to be expected, leaving both in deep trouble at the wrong end of League One! Wrexham 23rd, Franchise FC 21st.
