League One Review - April 9th

Southend United were made to work hard for their 12th home win against Blackpool on Saturday. Relegation threatened Blackpool at the cheek to take the lead at Roots Hall through Williams in the 32nd minute. It was going well for the Lancashire club until Eastwood levelled in the 59th minute, which was followed by the winner from Guttridge in the 85th minute. A win next week could see Southend promoted to the Championship! Southend United 1st, Blackpool 20th.

Brentford could only manage a draw at home to Bradford City. Symes put City ahead in the 36th minute, which was quickly followed by the leveller from Sodje 2 minutes before the break. Brentford 2nd, Bradford City 12th.

Huddersfield Town were dealt a blow by Gillingham, who are practically safe in League One for another season. Milligan put the Gills ahead in the 4th minute, but then had to wait until the 90th minute for Jarvis to secure the points, and League One football for another season. Gillingham 13th, Huddersfield Town 3rd.

Colchester United were undone by a single goal at the City Ground where Nottingham Forest won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Perch in the 71st minute. The win leaves Forest just 2 points off a play off place and 3 clubs on 63 points!! Nottingham Forest 8th, Colchester United 4th.

Port Vale helped to guarantee their League One status for another season with an unlikely 3-2 win over Swansea City at Vale Park. Togwell put Vale ahead in the 43rd minute, with Akinfenwa levelling in the 47th. Cummins and Constantine gave Vale a comfortable 2-goal cushion with strikes in the 58th and 63rd minutes. Fallon pulled one back with 2 minutes to go, but it wasn't enough to secure a point. Port Vale 11th, Swansea City 5th.

Barnsley slipped back to the play-off places, courtesy of a 1-1 hone draw against Chesterfield at Oakwell. Howard fired the home side ahead in the 31st minute, but had to settle for a point when Niven levelled in the 76th minute. Barnsley 6th, Chesterfield 14th.

The switch in the play-off places was aided by Oldham Athletic's surprise 1-2 home defeat at the hands of Franchise FC! it was all going to plan when Beckett put Oldham ahead from the spot in the 28th minute. Sadly the lead didn't last as McLeod netted a brace with goals in the 40th and 41st minutes to set up an unlikely win! Oldham Athletic 7th, Franchise FC 24th.

Yeovil Town did themselves a power of good against Doncaster Rovers with an emphatic 3-0 home win. Kiverton got the home side off to a good start with a strike in the 8th minute. The home fans then had to wait until the 57th minute for the cushion to be extended by Jevons, and then until the 86th minute for the result to be put beyond doubt. Yeovil Town 17th, Doncaster Rovers 9th.

Bristol City are safe too with their climb away from a disaterous start to the season and find themselves a remarkable 8-points off a play-off place with 5 matches left!! Surely not ............... ? Anyway, their latest win came against hapless Walsall at Bescot after Cotterill (44), Russell (51p) and Keogh (90) saddled the home side with their 6th home defeat of the campaign. Walsall 23rd, Bristol City 10th.

Scunthorpe United should be safe on 52 points, but had to work for a piont against battling AFC Bournemouth at Glanford Park! The home side found themselves in front when Beagrie converted a penalty in the 12th minute, but went in level after Hayter headed home in the 33rd. O'Connor scored his first goal for the Cherries in the 64th minute before Hinds secured a point in the 84th minute. Scunthorpe United 15th, AFC Bournemouth 18th.

Tranmere Rovers suffered a surprise defeat at relegation threatened Rotherham United at Millmoor. Butler (73) and Shaw (78) scored quick goals to stun Rovers in to defeat, enabling United to climb out of the bottom-4! Rotherham United 20th, Tranmere Rovers 16th.

Finally, Swindon Town and Hartlepool United did all of their relegation rivals a HUGE favour by taking points off each other at the County Ground. Humphreys put the visitors ahead in the 31st minute, but were pegged back by an equaliser from Peacock in the 54th. Swindon Town 22nd, Hartlepool United 21st.
