They finished well last season, making the play-offs, so perhaps it is no surprise to find Brentford leading the way at this early stage. They took pole position with a 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers at Griffin Park. Their goals came from Tabb (23) and Hutchinson (50). Brentford 1st, Tranmere Rovers 16th.

Oldham Athletic are tucked in just behind Brentford on goal difference thanks to a thumping 4-1 home win over Chesterfield at Boundary Park. The home side were two-up within the first 4 minutes as Branston (2) and Liddell (4) got the Latics off to a flyer! Niven pulled one back just after the break on 51, but a Warne brace (57 and 86) made sure that the points were staying put! A long season for Chesterfield? Oldham Athletic 2nd, Chesterfield 23rd.

Walsall made the journey to the north east to face Hartlepool United and could have come away with all three points. Westwood gave the the travelling fans something to smile about on 7 minutes, but Sweeney levelled on 63 to ensure that the points were shared. Hartlepool United 15th, Walsall 3rd.

A 39th minute Browning own goal made sure that Gillingham collected three points against AFC Bournemouth at Priestfield. Gillingham 4th, AFC Bournemouth 12th.

Huddersfield Town travelled to newly promoted Southend United and came away with a share of the points. Eastwood gave the home side the lead on 14 before goal scoring machine Abbott levelled right on the stroke of half time. Huddersfield Town 5th, Southend United 11th.

Bradford City made the short trip to Rotherham United coming away with a 1-1 draw. Burton put the home side ahead in the 81st minute before Windass levelled in the 84th minute. City were also involved in an appalling incident on the motorway home as youths threw rocks off a bridge at their coach. Rotherham United 14th, Bradford City 6th.

Port Vale must have thought that they stood a chance against Bristol City at Ashton Gate after the home side failed to score in their opening 3 matches. But how wrong they were!! In a blistering opening 45 minutes a total of 6 goals were scored! Brooker netted a brace in the 4th and 28th minutes with Stewart scoring in the 7th minute with Murray getting the other in the 14th minute leaving Vale chasing a 4-goal deficit. To their credit they did pull 2 back from Lowndes (35) and Bell (40), but that was all they could manage. Bristol City 17th, Port Vale 7th.

Scunthorpe United have started life in League One with confidence coming away from a rare trip to the City Ground with a 1-0 away win, leaving Nottingham Forest to wonder if things can get any worse! Sharp scored the only goal of the game in the 71st minute much to the delight of ex-Forest player, and Scunthorpe United manager Brian Laws. Scunthorpe United 8th, Nottingham Forest 20th.

Barnsley entertained Yeovil Town for the first time at Oakwell. The Yorkshire side won by a single goal from Williams in the 79th minute from the penalty spot. Barnsley 9th, Yeovil Town 24th.

Swansea City suffered their first home defeat of the season against Doncaster Rovers. The home side took the lead just before half time through McLeod, but Rovers snatched the points through Mulligan (74) and Guy (85). Swansea City 10th, Doncaster Rovers 13th.
