Crewe Alexandra nominally head the new league table (not that means much at this stage of the season) after a 2-1 home win over Brighton & Hove Albion at Gresty Road. Cox had put the Seagulls ahead on 14 minutes, but saw a Roberts penalty cancel the lead out on 22 minutes, which was followed by a second from Roberts 11 minutes from time. Crewe Alexandra 1st, Brighton & Hove Albion 17th.

Leyton Orient had a local(ish) derby as they travelled to Roots Hall to face relegated Southend United, and came away with a 2-1 away win. Gower had given Southend United a 24th minute lead. Thornton equalised for the visitors in the 38th minute with Boyd claiming all three points with an 86th minute goal. Southend United 19th, Leyton Orient 2nd.

Relegated Luton Town started life back in League One with a 2-1 home win over promoted Hartlepool United at Kenilworth Road. Currie gave the home side a 36th minute opener, with Goodall extending that lead in the 84th minute. A consolation penalty scored by Barker in the 90th minute reduced the arrears - but it was too little too late for the visitors. Luton Town 3rd, Hartlepool United 18th.

Oldham Athletic have not let their play-off disappointment get to them as they opened with a 2-1 win over Swansea City at Boundary Park. Ricketts scored a 3rd minute penalty for the Latics to get the home side off the mark. Scotland levelled for the visitors in the 55th minute, but Davies claimed all three points for the home side in the 90th minute. Oldham Athletic 4th, Swansea City 20th.

Last seasons strugglers Cheltenham Town started off with a home win over Gillingham at Whaddon Road. Gillespie scored the only goal of the game with a 24th minute strike. The game was marred with 3 red cards as Cox and Lomas for the Gills and Gillespie for the home side were all dismissed. Cheltenham Town 5th, Gillingham 22nd.

Hudderfield Town also started with a win as they saw off last seasons beaten play-off finalists Yeovil Town at the Glapharm Stadium. Beckett scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute. Huddersfield Town 6th, Yeovil Town 23rd.

Newly promoted Bristol Rovers resumed life back in League One with a draw away at Port Vale. Rodgers gave the home side the lead in the 66th minute, scoring from the penalty spot. Williams levelled for the visitors in the 77th minute. Port Vale 10th, Bristol Rovers 7th.

Newly promoted Walsall and Carlisle United also ended in a stalemate at Bescot. Gall gave the Cumbrians a 19th minute lead, with Mooney levelling just after the breal. Walsall 12th, Carlisle United 8th.

Northampton Town could only manage a draw against newly promoted Swindon Town at Sixfields. Kirk gave the home side a 9th minute lead, with Roberts levelling from the penalty spot in the 44th minute. Northampton Town 9th, Swindon Town 11th.

Tranmere Rovers slipped at home against Leeds United at Prenton Park as the visitors came away with a win. Greenacre gave the home side a 22nd minute lead. Heath levelled in the 55th minute and Kandol gave the Yorkshire side a 90th minute winner. Tranmere Rovers 21st, Leeds United 24th.

The games involving Nottingham Forest (16th) and AFC Bournemouth (13th), and Doncaster Rovers (14th) and Millwall (15th), all finished 0-0.
