League One Review - August 6th

Barnsley entertained Swindon Town at Oakwell and walked off with an opening day win as they beat the Wiltshire side 2-0 in the Yorkshire sun! Hayes netted on 11 minutes, with Shuker making sure of the points two minutes after the break.

With the strong finish to last season, Blackpool would have been tipped to start this one well. It wasn't to be at Bloomfield Road as they slipped up 1-3 against Chesterfield! It all started well with the home side taking the lead on 5 minutes through Parker, but that's as good as it got as Allison (23), DeBolla (39) and Blatherwick (67) took the points for the visitors.

Two second half goals for Brentford ensured that Scunthorpe United were given a tough introduction to League One football. Tabb (71) and a Campbell penalty (81) ensured that the points remained in SW London.

Relegated Gillingham were made to work for their opening day win at home to Colchester United. Danns (50) fired the visitors ahead before Crofts (75) and a last gasp winner from Byfield (89) kept the 3 points in Kent.

In a repeat of an opening day fixture from last season, Hartlepool United slipped up at home against Bradford City, going down 0-2. Veteran Windass fired City ahead in the 8th minute, with Petta securing the points 10 minutes after the break.

Goals either side of half time fired the Franchisee's in to a 2-0 lead against AFC Bournemouth. The home side were rocked back with a header from Jamie Hayter (76) and a last gasp chip of the keeper from Andrew Surman (90) to secure a point for the South Coast side.

Relegated Nottingham Forest got off to a winning start ahainst Huddersfield Town at the City Ground. Dobie netted on the stroke of half time to give the home side an half time lead. Abbott levelled on 64 minutes from the penalty spot, before Johnson secured the points with an 87th minute winner.

Oldham Athletic entertained newly promoted Yeovil Town at Boundary Park and dispatched them with a 2-0 win. Porter scored on 24 minutes, with the lead doubled 2 minutes later through Warne.

Rotherham United found out that life in League One is not going to be easy as they went down 1-2 to Walsall at Millmoor. Taylor fired Walsall in to a 2nd minute lead before Rotherham levelled through Butler just before the break. With a draw the most likely, Leitao secured the points in the 90th minute to send the Saddlers home happy!

Last seasons play-off winners, Southend United, were beaten 1-2 by Port Vale at Roots Hall. Lowndes secured a first half brace on 12 and 28 minutes before Gray scored a blinder for Southend on 72.

Swansea City celebrated their first League match in the new stadium with a 1-0 win over much fancied Tranmere Rovers. The only goal of the game came on the half hour through Akinfenwa.

Finally, Bristol City and Doncaster Rovers fought a 0-0 draw at Ashton Gate.
