League One Review - March 19th

Last updated : 19 March 2006 By Bournemouth Co-Ordinator
The surprise result of the day came at the National Hockey Stadium when struggling, and rooted to the bottom, Franchise FC scored an unlikely 2-1 home win over table toppers Southend United! Goater had put Southend in front in the 12th minute, only to see that cancelled out 3 minutes later by Smith. The winner came in the 77th minute from Taylor. Franchise FC 24th, Southend United 1st.

Brentford couldn't take advantage of Southend's slip. Their Friday night match away to Swansea City went the way of the home side. Akinfenwa put the home side ahead in the 19th minute, before Frampton levelled for the Londoners in the 29th minute. The winner came courtesy of a Robinson goal in the 85th minute. Swansea City 4th, Brentford 2nd.

Huddersfield Town did manage to take advantage as they whopped Rotherham United 4-1 at the Galpharm Stadium. Forte did put the visitors ahead in the 12th minute, but a Booth hat trick in the 31st, 38th and 81st minutes was more than sufficient for the points. Just for good measure Taylor-Fletcher finished the scoring in the 83rd minute. Huddersfield Town 3rd, Rotherham United 22nd.

Colchester United put a stop to their recent slide with a 1-0 win over Swindon Town at Layer Road. The only goal of the game came in the 14th minute when Iwelumo converted a penalty. Colchester United 5th, Swindon Town 23rd.

Hartlepool United just about kept themselves out of the drop zone with a point against Barnsley at the Victoria Ground. Porter put the home side ahead in the 8th minute, before Kay levelled for the visitors in the 35th. Hartlepool United 18th, Barnsley 6th.

Oldham Athletic did their chances of a play-off place no harm at all when they travelled to Valley Parade, and then imflicted an emphatic 4-1 over Bradford City. Warne, beckett and Butcher effectively killed the game off with strikes in the 15th, 16th and 33rd minutes respectively. Wilbraham pulled one back for the home side in the 49th minute, before Beckett restored the three-goal advantage in the 81st minute. Bradford City 15th, Oldham Athletic 7th.

Nottingham Forest maintained their slim play-off chances with a 2-1 away win over Doncaster Rovers at Belle Vue. Commons gave Forest a half time lead with a goal in the 24th minute. Holt then extended the lead immediately after the re-start. Coppinger set up an interesting final few minutes with a penalty in the 85th minute. Doncaster Rovers 10th, Nottingham Forest 8th.

Any chances of a play-off place that Chesterfield harboured have probably all but vanished as they slipped up at home against Scunthorpe United. Larkin may have opened the scoring for the Spirites in the 14th minute, but Hinds (46) and Crosby (62) made sure that the points were heading north with Scunthorpe! Chesterfield 9th, Scunthorpe United 11th.

Bristol City can safely assume that they are safe for another season after a 6-0 demolition of Gillingham at Ashton Gate. Brooker got the home side off to a dream start in the 10th minute, which was added to by Carey in the 7 minutes later. Skuse scored from the spot in the 44th minute, which followed the sending off of Johnson. Carey netted his second of the afternoon in the 49th minute, which was followed by strikes from Wilkshire (66 mins) and McCammon (89 mins) to complete the rout! Bristol City 12th, Gillingham 21st.

Tranmere Rovers slipped to give struggling Walsall 3-points on Friday evening at Prenton Park. A Smith brace for the visitors in the 40th and 71st minutes was (eventually) enough to secure the points. Greenacre did net an equaliser for the home side in the 63rd minute, but it wasn't enough for a share of the spoils. Tranmere Rovers 13th, Walsall 19th.

Port Vale slipped in their visit to Blackpool. The only goal of the game came in the 65th minute through Williams to assist Blackpools jump away from the drop zone. Blackpool 17th, Port Vale 14th.

Finally, AFC Bournemouth managed their first win in 10 attempts with a crucial 1-0 win over Yeovil Town at Dean Court. The only goal of this match came through Steve Fletcher, who scored his first goal of the season! AFC Bournemouth 16th, Yeovil Town 20th.
