League One Review - March 20th

The gap at the top of League One was cut to a single point as Luton Town could only manage a draw away to revitalised Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park. Underwood put the visitors ahead in the 6th minute, but 2 goals either side of half time from Killen (39) and Beckett (48) out the home side ahead. Luton left it late to claim a valuable point as Howard equalised in the final few moments!! Oldham Athletic 19th, Luton Town 1st.

Hull City came south and mullered AFC Bournemouth, taking all points in a deserved 0-4 away win, their 9th of the season. France put the promotion chasing side ahead in the 26th minute, with Elliott extending that lead 5 minutes later. Even with the dismissal of Shaun Maher, there was never going to be way back for Bournemouth. Elliott scored his second on 58, with Delaney rounding off the scoring in the 64th. AFCB 6th, Hull City 2nd.

Tranmere Rovers reclaimed 3rd place with a comprehensive 5-0 win over struggling Peterborough United at Prenton Park. Rovers powered in to a 3-0 lead in the first half through Hall (16), Hume (29) and McAteer (45). Whitmore (60) and Hall with his second (80) secured the points, leaving Peterborough staring at League Two football next season. Tranmere Rovers 3rd, Peterborough United 23rd.

Sheffield Wednesday could only claim a point at mid table Colchester United, even though they scored both of the goals in a 1-1 draw at Layer Road. Heckingbottom put the home side ahead with an own goal in the 48th minute. But McGovern rescued a point for the Yorkshire side in the 63rd minute. Colchester United 17th, Sheffield Wednesday 4th.

Hartlepool United returned to winning ways with a 2-1 away win at the expense of Bradford City. Williams put the visitors ahead just before the break. Bower levelled on the hour mark, but it wasn't enough as Porter secured the points in the 73rd minute. Hartlepool end a run of 4 straight defeats. Bradford City 11th, Hartlepool United 5th.

Brentford could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Chesterfield at Griffin Park. De Bolla put the visotrs ahead in the 38th minute, with Allison extending that lead in the 66th minute. But that was as good as it got for the Derbyshire side as Brentford cut the arrears 2 minutes later through Burton, leaving Tabb to level in the 77th minute. Brentford 7th, Chesterfield 12th.

Bristol City made short work of Torquay United at Plainmoor with the divisions second 4-0 away win of the day! Leroy Lita completed a first half hat trick with goals in the 9th, 12th and 21st minutes. Heffernan scored the 4th in the 54th minute. Torquay United 21st, Bristol City 8th.

Swindon Town must have feared another stunning away performance by Wrexham as the Welshman went in at half time 2-1 ahead - Urgate (32) and Sam (32) doing the damage. But to their credit, the home side bounced back with 4 goals of their own as Parkin secured a hat trick (40, 76, 90p) with Smith scoring the other in the 80th minute. Swindon Town 9th, Wrexham 22nd.

Doncaster Rovers went off to the sea side in Blackpool and came away with a 1-1 draw. Ryan put Rovers ahead in the 40th minute, with Murphy levelling in the 53rd minute. Blackpool 15th, Doncaster Rovers 10th.

Barnsley entertained Franchise FC at Oakwell, and played out another 1-1 draw. Nardiello put the Yorkshire side ahead just before the break, with Penss-Bilong levelling in the 55th minute. Barnsley 13th, Franchise FC 20th.

Huddersfield Town played out one of the most entertaining games of the day anywhere in the League as they beat Stockport County 5-3!! Feeney (remember him?) scored his first of the afternoon in the 2nd minute, but Booth cancelled that out 2 minutes later. Abbott put the home side ahead in the 51st minuteonly for Feeney to complete a hat trick in the 57th (penalty) and the 65th minutes. Then in the final 8 minutes, Mirfin (82), Ahmed (83) got Town back in front before Dolan summed up Stockport's season with an own goal in the 90th minute! Huddersfield Town 14th, Stockport County 24th.

Port Vale and Walsall came together at Vale Park, only for Port Vale to secure a 2-0 home win. The goals came in 6 second half minutes through Cummins (51) and Matthews (57). Port Vale 16th, Walsall 18th.
