League One Review - October 23rd

Southend United still top tree in League One even though they were held to a draw by Barnsley at Roots Hall. The home side thought that they were returning to winning ways when Goater put them ahead in the 58th minute from the penalty spot, but the visitors levelled 2 minutes later through Richards. Southend United 1st, Barnsley 14th.

Huddersfield Town slipped off top spot following a 7-goal thriller at Saltergate against Chesterfield. The home side raced in to a 3-goal lead by half time as Allison (10), Hall (29) and Larking (44) knocked the stuffing out of the visitors. Hudson pulled one back for Town in the 79th minute with Nicholson restoring the 3-goal advantage from the penalty spot in the 84th minute. Spirites hearts would have been in their mouths as Town still had time to pull back 2 more goals from Worthington (86) and Holdsworth (89), but an equaliser was not forthcoming. Chesterfield 8th, Huddersfield Town 2nd.

Swansea City failed to take advantage to go level on points at the top of the table as they were held 2-2 at Millmoor by Rotherham United. Leadbitter put the home side ahead in the 41st minute, but that was cancelled out a minute later by Trundle. Bean put the visitors ahead in the 58th minute, but any thoughts of that being the winner were snuffed out by Conlon who grabbed a last gasp 90th minute equaliser. Rotherham United 17th, Swansea City 3rd.

Brentford make up the quartet of top sides who failed to win. They were held to a goal-less draw by Blackpool at Bloomfield Road. Blackpool 20th, Brentford 4th.

Port Vale dented AFC Bournemouth's recent return to form with a 2-1 at Dean Court. A defensive blunder allowed Surman to put the home side ahead in the 23rd minute. But Cummins (74) and Paynter (86) claimed the goals to continue Vale's recent good form. AFC Bournemouth 12th, Port Vale 5th.

Bradford City won by a single Cooke goal in the 88th minute over Gillingham. The result has prompted the Gills manager Neale Cooper, question his own future at Priestfield: "We lacked quality and the boys could have been mentally stronger when we had possession of the ball. But I have said lately that if I can't do it, then it's time for me to move over and let someone else come in". Bradford City 6th, Gillingham 20th.

Scunthorpe United were pegged back by Swindon Town at the County Ground. Scunny had taken the lead in the 34th minute through Sparrow, but Roberts levelled in the 77th minute from the penalty spot. Swindon Town 24th, Scunthorpe United 7th.

Yeovil Town had their biggest home match of the season against Nottingham Forest, and took them to the cleaners in a fine 3-0 win at Huish. A Jevons brace in the 5th and 25th minutes set up a 2-goal first half lead before Taylor was sent off for the visitors. Davies rounded off a fine afternoon for the Somerset side with their third of the afternoon in the 81st minute. Yeovil Town 9th, Nottingham Forest 11th.

Oldham Athletic came out on top in another 7-goal thriller at Boundary park against Bristol City. Hughes and Wellens put Oldham in front in the 3rd and 24th minutes respectively before Brown pulled one back just after the restart (47). Porter restored the 2-goal advanatge in the 55th minute. Quinn reduced the deficit to one in the 78th minute before Liddell restored the 2-goal advantage again in the 86th minute. Murray made the scoreline respectable with a 90th minute strike. Oldham Athletic 10th, Bristol City 19th.

Walsall claimed a 1-0 win over Doncaster Rovers at the Bescot Stadium. Leitao scored the only goal of the game in the 71st minute. Walsall 13th, Doncaster Rovers 15th.

Hartlepool United claimed their first home League win of the season against Franchise FC!! McLeod had put the visitors ahead in the 23rd minute, but Lewington put past his own keeper to level matters. The winner went to Bullock, who scored in the 83rd minute. Hartlepool United 18th, Franchise FC 22nd.

The only other game in League One between Tranmere Rovers and Colchester United resulted in a 0-0 draw. Tranmere Rovers 21st, Colchester United 16th.
