League One Review - Sept 11th

Last updated : 11 September 2005 By Bournemouth Co-Ordinator
Brentford continue to top the pack in League One, but only on goal difference. Their victims this week were the Franchise Holders (who are the only side in League One not to have won a League game - shame!). The only goal of the game came courtesy of an O'Connor penalty on 62 minutes. Brentford 1st, Franchise FC 23rd.

Scunthorpe United continue to be the surprise package in League One as they beat Port Vale 2-0 with goals from Hinds (32) and Keogh (37). Scunthorpe United 2nd, Port Vale 7th.

Huddersfield Town produced an emphatic 3-0 away win over Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park. Schofield got proceedings under way in the 27th minute, with a second coming from Taylor-Fletcher in the 37th minute. The third came from Taylor-Fletcher in the 72nd minute. Oldham Athletic 13th, Huddersfield Town 3rd.

Swansea City had beyond doubt, the result of the day against hapless Bristol City at the New Stadium - giving them a 7-1 thrashing!! Amazingly it was only 1-0 at half time as McLeod got his first on the stroke of half time. After the break the goals simply rained in against the visitors as they were taken to the cleaners (and back). Akinfenwa doubled the lead on 50 minutes followed by Trundle with a penalty on 58 minutes. Then came 3 goals in 6 minutes as Bristol City collapsed. McLeod got his second goal on 69, Trundle got his second on 71 and Britton netted his first on 75!! Cotterill got the visitors a consolation on 81 before McLeod secured his hat trick with 3 minutes to spare. Swansea's Austin was sent off in the 90th minute in a match which saw the yellow card brought out a total of 8 occassions (Bristol City won the card count 5-3!). Swansea City 4th, Bristol City 22nd.

Rotherham United continued their good start to the season with a 3-0 home win over Gillingham at Millmoor. McLaren (46), Burton (81) and Butler (90) secured the points in the secnd half. Rotherham United 5th, Gillingham 17th.

Southend United travelled down the M4 to Swindon Town and came away with a 2-1 win! Barrett get the visitors off to a good start in the 2nd minute. Any further goal action was then reserved for the final few minutes as Gray had to wait til the 88th minute to double United's advantage. Fallon netted a consolation for Swindon in the 90th minute. Swindon Town 20th, Southend United 6th.

Tranmere Rovers and Bradford City went head to head on Friday evening at Prenton Park. City's Edghill got the scoring under way in the 21st minute before Facey levelled in the 24th minute. City restored their lead before the break as Wetherall netted in the 38th minute. Tranmere rescued a point in the 72nd minute through Greenacre. Tranmere Rovers 8th, Bradford City 10th.

Yeovil Town finally claimed their first home League win of the new campaign against Walsall at Huish, but not before Fryatt put the Saddlers ahead in the 34th minute from the penalty spot. then Jevons (65) and Gall (70) secured the points for the Somerset side. Yeovil Town 19th, Walsall 9th.

Barnsley piled on more League One misery for Nottingham Forest at Oakwell with a 2-0 home win. Both goals came in the 4 minutes leading up to half time as Conlon (41) and Shuker (45) made sure of the points. Barnsley 11th, Nottingham Forest 21st.

Like Yeovil Town, Chesterfield also claimed their first home win (in all competitions) against AFC Bournemouth at Saltergate. Larkin netted the first in the 27th minute, Allison made the most of a defensive slip in the 53rd minute with Nicholson making sure of the points in the 79th minute. AFC Bournemouth have now gone over 270 minutes with scoring! Chesterfield 16th, AFC Bournemouth 12th.

Hartlepool United seem to be getting back on track again after a poor start to their season. Their second away win of the campaign came at the expense of Blackpool. The 2-1 away win came from goals in the last 20 minutes of the game. Wright scored the first (and only goal) for the home side in the 70th minute, but 'Pool showed great bouncebackability with Sweeney levelling in the 86th and Istead snatching the victory for the visitors in the 90th minute. Blackpool 18th, Hartlepool United 14th.

They may have been much fancied to do well this season, but at the moment Doncaster Rovers cannot do anything right! Their misery was compounded at Layer Road against Colchester United as they shot themselves in the foot! Iwelumo got the home side off to a flyer in the 1st minute with Forte levelling for Roves in the 5th. Then 2 (!) own goals from McDaid (23) and Foster (27) effectively killed the game! McIndoe did convert a 54th minute penalty, but it wasn't enough to save the day. Colchester United 15th, Doncaster Rovers 24th.
