Charlton Athletic (1st) went to the top of League One, despite not being in League action this evening as they were pre-occupied with an outstanding Carling Cup match with Preston North End (8th). The Lancashire side beat the Addicks 2-0 at The Valley, with Russell (11th min) and Mayor (67th min) putting PNE through. Their games against Franchise FC (4th) and Hartlepool United (7th) - respectively - have been rearranged for later dates.

Sheffield United had the chance to go top, but slew it big time against Yorkshire neighbours, Huddersfield Town at Bramhall Lane. A brace from Novak (20th & 37th min) and a quick 3rd from Gobern wrapped up 3-points for the Terriers. Sheffield United 2nd, Huddersfield Town 3rd.

Brentford could have nicked top-spot if it wasn't for a late equaliser for Colchester United at Griffin Park. Donaldson had given the Bees the lead in the 56th minute, only to see Wordsworth level in the 91st minute. Brentford 5th, Colchester United 14th.

Stevenage Borough had the biggest win of the evening, romping away with a 5-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Broadhall Lane - an unthinkable result just a few years ago! In a first half goal-blitz, Borough ran riot through the Wednesday defence with goals from Ried (6th min), Mousinho (10th min), Bostwick (17th min), and Wilson (38th min), with Charles adding a 5th goal in the 67th minute, leaving Madine the task of scoring a consolation in the 74th minute. Stevenage Borough 6th, Sheffield Wednesday 10th.

Exeter City and Notts County had to settle for a share of the spoils at St James's Park as Sheehan put past his own keeper to give the grecians the lead in the 8th minute, with Burgess levelling 8 minutes later for the Magpies. Exeter City 23rd, Notts County 9th.

Carlisle United continued their fine run away from home, collecting their 3rd away win of the season with a 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park. Goals from Miller (3rd min) and Berrett (35th min pen) proved to be too much of a deficit as Akins scored what proved to be a consolation for the home side in the 51st minute. Tranmere Rovers 12th, Carlisle United 11th.

Oldham Athletic managed to sneak off with all 3-points from Walsall at Bescot as Taylor scored the only goal of the game in the 29th minute. Walsall 15th, Oldham Athletic 13th.

Yeovil Town managed to keep their heads above the drop zone with a 1-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers at Huish Park - Upson scoring the only goal of the game in the 8th minute. Yeovil Town 16th, Wycombe Wanderers 22nd.

Bouyed by their first win at the weekend, Chesterfield recorded their 2nd win of the season with a 1-0 success over fellow new-boys Bury at their b2Net Stadium. Clarke scored the only goal in the 66th minute. Chesterfield 17th, Bury 19th.

Rochdale managed to edge relegated Scunthorpe United at Spotland with a 1-0 win, Kennedy scoring the only goal of the game in the 59th minute to record back-to-back wins. Rochdale 18th, Scunthorpe United 21st.

AFC Bournemouth managed to break a winless streak at Brisbane Road, in the League, dating back to 1948, with a 3-1 win over Leyton Orient. Arter gave the Cherries the lead from the penalty spot in the 20th minute, with Baudry putting past his own keeper 3 minutes later. Thomas and Pugh put the result to bed with goals in the 74th and 81st minutes to lift the Cherries out of the drop-zone. Leyton Orient 24th, AFC Bournemouth 20th.
