Tranmere Rovers continued their fine start to the season with a remarkable 5-2 away win over Crawley Town at Broadfield Stadium. The rout got under way in the 2nd minute when Holmes netted for Rovers. To their credit the home side turned it around through Simpson and McFadzean with goals in the 12th and 16th minutes. That was as good as it got as the visitors netted through Cassidy (39th & 53rd mins), Akpa Akpro (46th min) and Robinson (90th min) to seal a fine win. Crawley Town 8th, Tranmere Rovers 1st.
Notts County compounded the misery being felt by Portsmouth at the moment with a straight forward 3-0 win over the financially stricken Hampshire side. Goals from Arquin (5th and 57th mins) plus Judge just after half time sealed the win for the home side. Notts County 2nd, Portsmouth 21st.
For a brief moment during the course of play, Stevenage Borough were top of League One when Risser gave Borough the lead in the 16th minute, but they were eventually pegged back by Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat when Brown levelled with 11 minutes left. It seems that Bury are in for a long hard season, not helped with a thumping 4-1 defeat at Gigg Lane at the hands of Franchise FC. A Bowditch hat-trick (33rd, 55th, & 66th mins) drew a response from John-Lewis in the 81st minute leaving Chadwick to finish the scoring in the 93rd minute. Bury 24th, Franchise FC 4th.
Swindon Town chalked up an easy 4-0 win over AFC Bournemouth at The County Ground. Ritchie netted a brace in the 12th and 67th minutes, with Williams (25th min) and Rooney (85th min) to leave the Cherries licking their wounds. Time running out for Paul Groves? Swindon Town 5th, AFC Bournemouth 17th.
Sheffield United managed to edge past Yeovil Town at Huish Park, as the home side slip backwards after a good initial start to the season. The only goal of the game came in the 55th minute when Collins scored what proved to be the winner. Yeovil Town 13th, Sheffield United 6th.
Walsall seem to be made of sterner stuff these days. Last season as soon as they went behind it would have ended in defeat, but not this season. Preston North End were the visitors to Bescot, they even took the lead through Byrom in the 10th minute. The Saddlers hit back through Baxendale (38th min) and a brace from Bowerman (55th pen & 58th minutes). Walsall 7th, Preston North End 11th.
Brentford rounded off a good week with a 1-0 win over struggling Oldham Athletic at Griffin Park. Forshaw scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute to seal the win. Brentford 9th, Oldham Athletic 19th.
Carlisle United piled the misery on to Coventry City who are stuggling to find their feet in the third tier. Cadamarteri gave the Cumbrians the lead in the 25th minute from the penalty spot, with Mc Goldrick levelling for the Sky Blues in the 38th minute. Livesey netted the winner to ensure that the points were heading back up the M6 with a 57th minute strike. Coventry City 23rd, Carlisle United 10th.
Crewe Alexandra and Leyton Orient had to settle for a share of the spoils at Gresty Road as a Tootle (2nd min) strike for the home side was cancelled out by a Rowlands goals in the 19th minute. Crewe Alexandra 15th, Leyton Orient 14th.
Hartlepool United and Shrewsbury Town also had to settle for a share of the spoils at Victoria Road. Franks gave Pool the lead in the 15th minute, with a Morgan brace turning the game round with goals in the 27th and 82nd minute. A point was salvaged by Monkhouse in the 90th minute. Scunthorpe United managed to ease their way clear of the drop-zone with a 1-0 win over Colchester United at Glanford Park. A Clarke penalty in the 76th minute sealed the points for Scunny. Scunthorpe United 18th, Colchester United 22nd.
