League One Review - Sept 25th

In front of more than 18000 fans in their new home, Swansea City maintained their top of the table perch against Nottingham Forest with a 1-1 draw. Lester fired the visitors ahead in the 54th minute before Martinez levelled for the home side with 6 minutes to spare. Swansea City 1st, Nottingham Forest 14th.

Southend United continue their fairy tale start to the season, this time with a thumping 4-2 away win against Rotherham United. Bentley and Barrett put the Shrimpers 2-up with their 18th and 26th minute strikes respectively before Murdock (34th min) and Burton (45th min pen) brought the home side back level again at the break. Then a Gray brace in the 84th and 88th minutes ensured that the points were heading back down to Essex. Rotherham United 10th, Southend United 2nd.

Huddersfield Town complete the leading trio, all on 20 points, as they collected a point on their travels to Colchester United. Elokobi put the home side ahead 4 minutes after the restart, with Taylor-Fletcher levelling in the 65th minute. Colchester United 15th, Huddersfield Town 3rd.

Brentford lost at home for the first time, as they were undone by Bristol City who collected their first away win of the season! Stewart got things under way for the visitors in the 12th minute as Wilkshire added a second 5 minutes before the break. Brentford's Brooker reduced the deficit before City's Brooker restored the 2-goal advantage. Sodje got a second for the home side, but it wasn't enough. Brentford 4th, Bristol City 22nd.

Scunthorpe United have slipped in recent weeks while Walsall have been quietly sneaking up on the blind side! Fryatt put the Saddlers ahead at Glanford Park with a 15th minute penalty, which was cancelled out by a Sharp equaliser in the 55th minute. Then it was Osborn who netted a brace in the 66th and 75th minutes to secure the points for the visitors. Scunthorpe United 5th, Walsall 9th.

Liddell scored a controversial penalty in the 62nd minute to help Oldham Athletic to all 3-points against AFC Bournemouth at Boundary Park. Oldham Athletic 6th, AFC Bournemouth 16th.

The ageing pair of Windass and Claridge steered Bradford City to all 3-points against Swindon Town at the County Ground as the visitors helped themselves to s 3-2 away win. Fallon put Swindon ahead in the 19th minute, with Windass levelling in the 34th. Claridge get his 2-goals in the 64th and 72nd minutes before Fallon netted his 2nd of the game in the 76th minute. Swindon Town 23rd, Bradford City 7th.

Chesterfield continue their climb up League One with a fine 3-1 win over Hartlepool United at Saltergate, even though it was the visitors who took the lead in the 11th minute through Proctor. The Spirites then hit back in the second half with goals from Larkin (54), Niven (67) and Hall (79) to secure the win. Chesterfield 8th, Hartlepool United 20th.

Barnsley slipped at home against a Doncaster Rovers side, buoyed by their mid-week Carling Cup win over Manchester City. Green in the 13th minute and Mulligan in the 83rd did what was required to take the points home with them. Barnsley 11th, Doncaster Rovers 19th.

Port Vale may have started the season well, but they are now back in mid-table following their 1-0 defeat away to Yeovil Town. Harrold scored the only goal of the game in the 85th minute. Yeovil Town 18th, Port Vale 12th.

Much fancied Tranmere Rovers are not exactly setting League One alight this season, and didn't help their cause with a 2-2 draw at home to Gillingham. Jackson put the hosts ahead in the 10th minute before Byfield got his first with the equaliser in the 16th. Greenacre put Rovers back in front immediately after the break before Byfield scored his second, from the penalty spot, in the 63rd minute. Tranmere Rovers 13th, Gillingham 21st.

Finally, Blackpool entertained Franchise FC at Bloomfield Road and ran out 3-2 winners. Clarke put the hosts ahead in the 17th minute from the penalty spot, which was cancelled out with a Rizzo penalty at the other end 2 minutes later. The Franchise holders then had the nerve to go 2-1 up at the break through a Small strike in the 34th minute! A Mills own goal restored parity before Burns secured the points for Blackpool in the 68th minute. Blackpool 17th, Franchise FC 24th.
