League One Round Up (December 20)

Luton Town headed down the M4 to Bristol City for one of the games of the day, and sneaked out with all three points in front of a healthy 13414 at Ashton Gate. Town took the lead on 34 minutes through Coyne, before Bristol City levelled mid way through the second half. But it was not enough to take a share of the spoils as Showunmi snatched an injury time winner for the visitors. Bristol City 10th, Luton Town 1st.

The most remarkable result of the day came at the KC Stadium as Hull City demolished Tranmere Rovers by a comprehensive scoreline - 6-1. Ashbee opened the scoring for the home side on 34 mins before Elliott made it 2-0 on 54. Dadi pulled a goal back for Rovers before Nick Barmby restored the 2-goal advantage a minute later. Elliott then completed his hat trick in the 68th and 75th (pen) minutes, allowing Allsopp to complete the rout. The day was made worse for Rovers as they were forced to use three keepers!! Hull City 2nd, Tranmere Rovers 3rd.

AFC Bournemouth maintained the chase with a 2-1 win over Swindon Town at Dean Court (AFCB 4th, Swindon Town 14th), as the chasing pack also got back to winning ways.

Brentford nothed up a 1-0 home win over Colchester United - John Salako doing the damage just before half time. Brentford 5th, Colchester United 18th.

Bradford City kept it local with a trip to Huddersfield Town, they too notching up a single goal victory over their neighbours. Morrison scored the winner 3 minutes before the break. Huddersfield Town 13th, Bradford City 5th.

Crisis club Wrexham were hammered at home by Hartlepool United who notched up their 2nd away of the season in emphatic style - winning 5-1! Humpreys (8), Sweeney (18), Porter (35) and Boyd (37) did the damage in the opening 45 minutes even if Urgate scored what proved to be the consolation on 25 mins. The rout was completed in the second half by Sweeney on 72 minutes. Wrexham 23rd, Hartlepool United 7th.

Chesterfield and Torquay United shared the points at Saltergate in a 1-1 draw. Gosling put Torquay ahead on 48 before Alison levelled in the 73rd minute. Chesterfield 9th, Torquay United 20th.

Sheffield Wednesday travelled to Belle Vue for the first time in nearly half a century and notched up an emphatic 4-0 win over Doncaster Rovers in front of 10131. MacLean collected a hat trick in the 9, 59 and 76 minutes. The fourth going to Jones in the 22nd minute. Sheffield Wednesday 9th, Doncaster Rovers 16th.

Walsall are slowly making progress back up League One, this time at the expense of Blackpool at Bescot in 1 3-2 win. Scott taylor fired the visitors in to a 32 minute lead before Letiao levelled just before the break. Robinson then put Walsall back in front on 55 before Parker levelled for Blackpool 2 minutes later. But it was not enough for a share of the spoils as Robinson netted his second of the afternoon on 70 minutes to secure the win. Walsall 11th, Blackpool 19th.

Barnsley wrapped up a neat 4-0 over Peterborough United at Oakwell to leave the visitors deep in relegation trouble. Chopra collected a hat trick by netting in the 14th, 57th and 77th minutes. The other scorer was Shuker who netted in the 51st minute. Barnsley 12th, Peterborough United 21st.

Port Vale stunned Oldham Athletic by inflicting the first win over the Latics for 8 matches, ending their 7 match winning run at Vale Park. Vernon opened the scoring on 34 minutes for the visitors, but this stunned Vale in to action with an equaliser on 36 through Paynter, and then second half strikes through Birchill (62) and a Matthews pen (79) secured the 3 points for the Potteries Club. Port Vale 15th, Oldham Athletic 17th.

Stockport County entertained the Franchise holders at Edgeley Park and collected a very rare win - their third of the season in a 3-1 win. Daly got things rolling for County in the opening minute, and then netted his second in the 41st minute. Tapp scored what proved to be a consolation for the visitors before A Williams restored the 2-goal advantage in the 87th minute. County 24th, Franchise FC 22nd.
