Despite the defeat at Roots Hall manager Sean O'Driscoll was proud of his players. After the match he was quoted on BBCi as saying: "There was only one team in it for the first 21 minutes until the red card. But I don't think you can ask any more from what they gave after that. We gave them problems for the rest of the game. I felt that if we got a goal, Southend might struggle, but it took a fantastic strike by Luke Guttridge to win it".

On the other hand, the Southend manager. Brian Tilson expressed relief at the victory over the Cherries. He was quoted after the match as saying: "We looked tired by the end as three games in five days had taken a lot out of them, while Bournemouth hadn't played for eight days. They've seriously got to have a look at these fixtures at Christmas. We had to be careful, but we stuck at it, and it was a fantastic strike from Luke Guttridge to win us the game".
