Notts County had the biggest win of the day with a 5-0 drubbing of Bradford City at Meadow Lane. Davies gave County a 17th minute lead, which was followed by Hughes hat trick with goals in the 39th, 43rd, and a 55th minute penalty. City's misery was completed with a Moloney strike in the 86th minute. Notts County 1st, Bradford City 24th.

AFC Bournemouth started the new season as they finished last season - with a thumping away win! Their victims this time were Bury, who missed out in last seasons play-offs. Pitman gave the Cherries a 17th minute lead at Gigg lane, whcih was added to with a header from Fletcher in the 39th minute, Molesley put the result beyond doubt with a 50th minute bullet. Bury 23rd, AFC Bournemouth 2nd.

Aldershot Town had a good win to open with, 3-1 over Darlington at The Recreation Ground. Morgan gave the Shots a 3rd minute lead, with Sandell extending the lead in the 30th minute. Soares put the result just about beyond dount with a strike 2 minutes after the restart. Dowson pulled one back for the visitors with 5 minutes left. Aldershot Town 3rd, Darlington 21st.

It was not a happy debut to the Football League for new boys Burton Albion at the New Meadow as Shrewsbury Town ran away with a 3-1 win. Robinson gave Town a 10th minute lead, with Hibbert doubling the advantage in the 49th minute. Pearson scored Albions first goal in the League in the 62nd minute, but it wasn't enough to inspire his colleagues to get a draw as Labadie made it 3-1 in the 83rd minute. Shrewsbury Town 4th, Burton Albion 20th.

Torquay United had a happier return to the Football League with a 2-0 win over Chesterfield at Plainmoor. Rendell scored in the 15th minute with Mansall adding to the scoreline in the 71st minute to seal the win. Torquay United 5th, Chesterfield 22nd.

Relegated Cheltenham Town had to come from behind to secure the points against Grimsby Town at Whaddon Road. Conlon had given the visitors a 35th minute only for Ridley and Hayles to secure the points with strikes in the 56th and 68th minutes. Cheltenham Town 6th, Grimsby Town 17th.

Dagenham & Redbridge were made to work for their win over relegated Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road. Nurse gave the Daggers a 43rd minute lead, but saw Moore level in the 72nd minute. benson claimed the win with the winner in the 74th minute. Crewe Alexandra 16th, Dagenham & Redbridge 7th.

Lincoln City could only manage a single goal win over Barnet at Sincil Bank as Kobacs scored the only goal in the 59th minute. Lincoln City 8th, Barnet 19th.

Rotherham United left it late to claim the points against Accrington Stanley at the Don Valley Stadium. A Warne goal in the 89th minute proved to be enough to secure 3-points. Rotherham United 9th, Accrington Stanley 18th.

Morecambe and Hereford United saw out a 2-2 at Christie Park. Stanley and Dummond scored for the home side in the 43rd and 57th minutes, punctuated with goals from Pugh in the 39th and 90th minutes for the visitors. Morecambe 11th, Hereford United 10th.

Port Vale and Rochdale played out a 1-1 draw at Vale Park. Thompson gave Dale a 66th minute lead, with Richards levelling from the penalty spot in the 75th minute. Port Vale 12th, Rochdale 13th.

Finally, Northampton Town (15th) and Macclesfield (14th) played out a 0-0 draw at Sixfields.
