Wigan Reaction

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, manager Sean O'Driscoll was quoted as saying: "We have been down to bare bones before but probably never as bare as tonight. I had a feeling we might get a hiding but I am pleased with everyone's effort. They understood what we were trying to do and to a man, they did as well as they possibly could. I'm pleased and hopefully we can go to Oldham on Saturday with a bit of confidence. I thought they performed, we passed the ball when we got it and had to defend but they are a premier division side and we are a team of waifs and strays at the moment. So I thought the performance was good, it was organised and disciplined and we played when we had it. Apart from Brian Stock who has picked up a bit of a dead leg we came through with no injuries touch wood. [Chances] were few and far between, we were never going to dominate the game but we did what we try to do, be confident on the ball, pass it when we had it and not just launch balls and give it away. We worked hard and got out what we possibly could get out of the game. Extra time would have probably killed us so in some sense I'm pleased and hopefully we can go to Oldham with a bit of confidence".

For Wigan Athletic, their manager was disappointed with the 1-0 win over the Bournemouth babes! He was quoted after the match, on the Official Wigan web site as saying: "At least we won the game, there were no injuries, we got a clean sheet, John Filan looked very sharp in his first game back since Reading, so there's always positives to take out of it but I was looking for certain players to do a lot more tonight and they didn't produce. It could have been worse because it could have gone to extra time. I'll have to give credit Bournemouth, they've come here with a young team and given a good account of themselves. We should be doing a lot a better than that though, I'm disappointed but it's a night to give credit to Bournemouth, they played ever so well. I gave people opportunities, there were people crying out for games, there's no better time for them to show what they can do. It was a good pitch, good conditions and it just goes to show if you don't start the game off properly, you can't pick it up. In the end it took Jason [Roberts] to give us the spark we were lacking. It must have been an awful game to watch, but don't take anything away from Bournemouth, they played very well".
