Watching the first half, you'd never have said that either side were threatened with relegation as most of the opening 45 minutes were played at a pedestrian pace. Very strange given that we needed to points to give ourselves a chance, and Chesterfield needed the points to make sure of their Second Division survival.

So when the opening goal came on the half-hour mark, it came as quite a surprise, Warren Feeney crossed the ball for Derek Holmes to head home from close range, especially as the game had no urgency at all. Even after the goal, the pace didn't seem to pick up.

As you might imagine, other chances were few and far between for both sides. There were a couple of efforts, but none of them tested the keeper in any shape manner or form.

The half time scores brought mixed news, Colchester were beating Bury and Notts County were beating Cardiff City. If the scores remained the same, we'd be relegated at the second of the second half!!

As it was, the second half was very different, suddenly there was greater urgency in both sides. Reward came less than 10 in to the second half when Warren Feeney was presented the ball after a brief game of ping-pong in the area. Let's face it, he couldn't really miss from 4-yards!! The prospects of having a stay of execution grew as news filtered through that Cardiff City had equalised against Notts County, and further celebration came three minutes later when Feeney was clearly brought down for a penalty. Up stepped Wade Elliott to slot the ball away nicely. The keeper dived the right way, but the ball the so far in to the bottom right hand corner, that he stood no chance of stopping the spot kick.

Bournemouth could have scored more, but it wasn't to be, then came the news we'd been waiting for, Cardiff had taken the lead against Notts County!!

The only downer of the afternoon was a Chesterfield consolation late in the game. My immediate thought was the impact on goal difference, just in case it were to boil down to that next Saturday.

A fine win this afternoon, even if we didn't play our absolute best, but when you're struggling at the bottom, you don't really care were the points come from. Unfortunately we play Wrexham (again) to decide our future. With Notts County at home to Huddersfield, it should make for a nail biting afternoon on the final day.

Warren Feeney for all his industry
