March 5 AFC Bournemouth 3-0 Oldham Athletic Att: 7075

We started with Ings and Symes up front against Oldham's 4-5-1, with highly rated new loan signing Dalla Valle and the returning Molesley on the bench. Wiggins having picked up a calf injury, Cummings filled the left-back berth - another cause for anxiety!

The defence was given a stiff test early on as the visitors won a succession of corners and free kicks in dangerous positions with their bustling striker Tounkara (on loan from Sunderland) looking useful. Former Cherry Warren Feeney was also actively involved and received a bit of stick from the home fans.

Despite the pressure, Jalal didn't have a save to make and we gradually took control of the game with Amos tipping a long-range effort from Smith over the bar and Cummings going close from a variation on the corner ploy. A Feeney drive also narrowly missed the far post as he cut in from the right.

The game was by now fairly even, but on the 20 minute mark we deservedly took the lead following a corner on the right. As Pugh floated the ball over, Symes broke away from his marker at the near post to send a glancing header into the six yard box where Hollands sneaked in to nod the ball past the helpless Oldham keeper.

We looked pretty comfortable for a while, but as half time approached the Latics began to regain the initiative and put our defence under pressure again. However, the back four stood firm with Pearce at his combative best and Cummings looking more like his old self.

HT: 1-0

The second period almost started disastrously for the Cherries, when a misplaced back pass from the kick-off nearly allowed an Oldham player an attempt on goal! However, nerves were settled a couple of minutes later when Pugh provided a delightful through ball for Symes who beat the offside trap to race through on goal. In the last game we saw Feeney denied by the keeper's legs in a similar 1-on-1 situation, but this time Symes was coolness personified as he drilled the ball into the left-hand corner, the keeper just getting the faintest of touches. A great time to score.

The visitors now had no option but to attack which left spaces at the back for us to exploit on the counter-attack. The game then became a rather scrappy affair with neither side creating clear-cut chances - which was of course just what we wanted with a 2-0 lead!

With 20 minutes to go, Bradders brought on Dalla Valle to replace Ings who had worked hard without having a sniff at goal. The Finn looked assured with a good first touch and soon set up Symes with a killer pass. Unfortunately, the effort was ruled out for offside.

In the last ten minutes, Fletcher came on for Symes, much to the latter's understandable displeasure, as he was having a fine game, and, like last week, the big man soon made his presence felt. A long throw up the line from Smith on the right, a pin-point Supa header to Dalla Valle who, with goal behind him, swivelled to volley left-footed, high and hard, beyond the astonished Amos. What a debut - and it was his weaker foot too!

With the game safe, Molesley joined the fray to a rousing reception from the home fans and the chant of the day was "We've got more blondes than you" as the Oldham fans headed for the exits. At the final whistle, the players weren't as jubilant as at Dagenham, but no doubt pleased about a professional performance and a clean sheet.

A comfortable win in the end in a somewhat muted atmosphere - we never had to chase the game and Oldham, low on confidence, never forced Jalal to make a save. However, this routine "day at the office" was achieved by much hard work throughout the team, making it very difficult to single out a Man of the Match.

However, it goes to Man Of The Match

Cummings who exemplified the spirit in the team....

......I needn't have worried!
