Sept 2 AFC Bournemouth 0-0 Tranmere Rovers Att: 5695

Same line-up as for Monday's game except for O'Connor in his natural position at right back with Cooper switching to the other flank and Big Fletch on the bench.

The game started at a lively pace with both teams playing in a similar passing style. On the quarter hour mark Cooper pulled up with a calf injury to be replaced by Hart at left back.

Despite enterprising approach play, neither side could find the final ball and the goalkeepers were barely tested. We gradually gained the upper hand and started to create at least half-chances. On one occasion Surman's trickery on the byline set up a shooting opportunity for Cooke, but he dragged the ball wide.

The visitors also had a narrow escape when Stock swung a cross low into their six-yard box and the ball was scrambled away with Hayter appealing for handball.

HT: 0-0

The second half continued in similar vein with the Cherries controlling the game with confident passing, but without coming up with the final product. Tranmere appeared to have settled for a point, yet still looked to hit us on the break if we got overstretched.

Up front, Hayter worked hard and Dani, as on Monday, was receiving some rough treatment. At the back we were looking reassuringly solid, though.

Achterberg was now by far the busier of the two keepers, particularly around the hour mark when more clever play by Surman on the left set up a shooting chance for Browning, but the Tranmere keeper saved well.

For the last quarter of an hour Dani was replaced by Fletcher and we began resorting to more of a direct style which nearly paid dividends. However, we never quite got the run of the ball and the visitors held out.

A couple of lapses of concentration near the end almost let Rovers grab a win they didn't really deserve, with an offside flag saving the day for us on one occasion.

Although it's always disappointing to drop points at home, this was another creditable performance given our injury list and the inexperience of many of our players:

Stewart: Looked confident, distributed the ball well and kept his concentration despite having very little to do.
Young: Seems to be relishing his new role in the centre of the defence; solid performance.
Gowling: Impressive. Very composed and reads the game well.
O'Connor: Much more effective on the right. Could be one of our best attacking options.
Cooper: Unlucky to pick up an injury.
Browning: Playing better than ever. MOM
Stock: Still an enigma. Glorious 50 yard passes followed by inexplicable ineptitude. Another mixed performance.
Cooke: Some good contributions, but I've seen him play better.
Surman: Getting better all the time. Some outstanding work.
Rodrigues: Always lively, but needs to score to justify selection ahead of Big Fletch?
Hayter: Worked hard, but things aren't going for him at the moment.
Hart: First time I'd really seen him. Had an excellent game and looked a good prospect.
Fletcher: Same as ever!
Foley: Got involved straight away. Could be interesting!
